ESA Training Explained!

Updated: Dec 15, 2025

What Is An ESA?

  • An ESA or Emotional Support Animal is an animal that provides support for owners who may be struggling emotionally with depression, anxiety, panic attacks and other stressors.

  • Some added benefits of having a certified ESA are pet rent fees get waived, most airplane companies provide accommodations, and some shops allow them as well as service animals.

  • ESA's are not Service Animals. ESA's provide emotional support and Service Animals perform specific duties for each individuals needs. One example of a service animal is one that aids a blind person needing help to navigate the world.

What Is ESA Training?

ESA training is for individuals who would benefit from taking their pet out in public and having their pet well-behaved when they do. An example of this might be someone who wants to go to their favorite shop, but feel stressed or anxious in social situations. Those who want their pet to be able to be out and about while providing their owners with the support they need (without getting stressed out or scared themselves) would benefit from ESA training.

The ESA training course for cats includes training for tasks that the owner wants them to be able to perform just like a Service Animal would, as well as Emotional Support training to help with those who want their cat to go to them in distressing times.

The ESA training course for dogs is for those who either want training for their dogs to provide emotional support exactly when their owners need it, or it is for those that want to have the training for a Service Dog but don't want the commitment.

Why Do I Include This Training?

Do ESA's need training? No, they don't necessarily need any training, however, if you are going to take your ESA out with you into public places frequently, they will likely need some form of training to provide the support you need.

For cats, unfortunately the ADA does not see them as Service Animals, so my goal is to get as many people as possible who believe cats should be Service Animals like dogs and miniature horses. As well as provide training for those who need/want a service cat but their state doesn't allow them to be.
